Match report by Sam Vail |
Renegades took to the field with a huge number of subs available. The Mildenhall players looked well drilled and big with a good forwards game. Mildenhall kicked off and the Renegades started their best 15 minutes of the game. Fresh and eager, winning rucks at will, Daray taking a great pass from Ritz and powering over the line to score. Looked like it was going to be the first of many. Daray unfortunately missed the conversion, giving the Renegades a 5 nil lead in the opening 5 minutes. A penalty was kicked by Daray after a good passage of Renegades forward play. Then it all went wrong. Chris ‘the glove’ Milne had been competing well in the line-out, then got gouged in the eye and got even more intense than he had been (I’m gonna kill the fucker!). The Renegades pack didn’t make a forward step all day, getting shoved backwards half the time. Mildenhall scored a try close to half time, and missed the conversion leaving a score of Renegades 8, Mildenhall 5 when the half time whistle blew. All change for the Renegades as 6 subs came on. Fresh legs and some great defensive work stopped at least 2 Mildenhall surging runs and almost trys. Towards the end, the Renegades were desperately hanging on and managed to scrape through for the win. Some say ‘lucky’ and ‘didn’t deserve to win’, but at the end of the day, it’s a W in the results column and a learning experience for all the new boys. Excellent work all round from the new boys (Rob, Owain, Bill, Colin), we will definitely need your services as the season progresses. We also had a bunch of players on the injured list and potential players turn up to support (Tom, Alfie, Ibbo, Eddie). “Big shouts out to Darey for getting the first Renegades points of the season…who’ll be next to score? To Ritz for a marauding game from 8 (no, that cross kick penalty still doesn’t look like it would have been a good idea!) To Carl for sacrificing several internal organs for the cause and great impact from the bench. To The Glove for not giving in to his body and brain’s, who were telling him to get off the pitch, and listening instead to the subs who didn’t fancy it so told him stay on for the last 5mins. But the biggest shout goes to Rob – some big hits in the loose and all over the opposition – great start fella!” Will Cleare “Watching from the sidelines, I think Jay deserves a big mention too for at least 2 try saving tackles. Well done boys.” Tom Wykes Shame the showers were scalding! Jonty managed to fund a large portion of the Tour, thanks to several drinking fines in the pub. Rob was lucky to keep his head on after a jibe at Rik. The food in the Millers was great! |
