Match report by Sam Vail

A cold blustery day greeted the Renegades as they took to the field. Another new lineup as Will came back from a paternity break and Graham debuted with a university break. Another South African guested in the large frame of Matt Kibble. A weak start from the Renegades, facing into the sun and wind. It wasn’t long before Bury were putting the pressure on and scoring an inevitable penalty. The Renegades fought back up the pitch with some strong running from forwards and backs. Just as a move looked like it was breaking down, Daray stepped up with a beautiful drop goal into the wind, levelling the scores. Bury attacked again with renewed vigour scoring 2 tries, the second of which was due to sloppy defence as their number 12 ran straight through the Renegades defenders. Renegades backs were running hard and making some great yards. Forwards were still too slow in support.

The second half started and the Renegades were soon back into the fray. Strong running from Matt, Ren, Carl and The Glove pushed Bury back into their 22. A determined run from Matt, offloading to Ren then Carl who scythed past the Bury line and behind the posts for a score. Daray’s dropkick conversion missed by inches. The Renegades scored a second try from a penalty tap-and-go by Matt which was disallowed because he forgot the tap part of the move. The Renegades lineout was functioning well, the Glove picking everything he could reach, shame about some crappy throws. Having Carl loop round to secure the ball made for a much stronger position from which to either drive forward or feed the backs. The scrums were also going well, holding firm against a much younger and well drilled Bury pack. Ren claiming 2 strikes against the head! More pressure from the Renegades failed to breach the Bury defence and the game ended after 80 hard minutes with a Bury win.

Overall a tough game which could have gone either way. Youth and fitness were the deciding factors. The average age of the Renegades front row being 41. Not a bad performance, compared to the previous 3 games. Still need to secure ruck and maul balls better. Tackling was first class with Graham and Sam putting in some hard hits. Darey picking up their wing and walking him back towards his own tryline and gently setting him down. Great support from subs Bill and Adam and spectators Eddie and Ritz.
