Match report by Chris (The Glove) Milne |
Renegades started strongly in the winter sun and were bossing the set piece with a series of scrums five metres from the Wendons line, however Tweetie Pie, back in the canary suit after last weeks appearance wasn’t able to see The Glove, Barnaby and Carl crossing the chalk. Although Renegades controlled the set piece, Wendons had the better of the rucks, strongly clearing bodies and getting their hands on the ball in Tweetie’s blind spot, full credit must go to their back-row for this. The game settled down into periods of both teams taking ball into contact and being turned over until Flora, who was marshalling the backs from 10 instead of his usual 12, began to exhort a free flowing running rugby game. The ball was flung wide at every opportunity and eventually Harry the back (not to be confused with Harry the forward) broke up the wing. Poised like a ballerina on the touchline he fed the ball inside for the Glove to have a free run to the line. With a convert your own try policy, the score remained at 5 – 0 to the Renegades, the kick pushed wide. Renegades were too happy to celebrate the try and were quickly caught napping at a quickly taken penalty and found themselves 7 – 5 down. With the calls from skipper Flora for commitment the Gades immediately camped themselves in the Wendons 22 for the rest of the half with one try from Barnaby to restore the lead 10 – 7 Gades at half time. With the wind behind the Renegades in the second half they embarked on a series of flowing forays towards the Wendons line. Jack Cowley took the ball from the lineout and burst through a couple of tackles to run clean through on the Wendons full back, stripping him of his wallet and watch before selling him an outrageous dummy to go under the posts. He pushed his conversion wide. 15 – 7 Renegades. There were some great tackles being put in by debutants Harry Cowley (the forward) and Ginge, and after another lineout Jack Cowley drew the opposition 10 to feed Carl scything through the Wendons defence. The move made this reporter mist over at the resemblance to the running lines of one of the finest centres to grace the game Alan Tait. Carl nailed his conversion to put Gades 22 – 7 up. Next it was the turn of Barnaby to add to his tally with a powerful run at an unwitting Wendons back to make the score 27 –7 with the conversion missed. Harry Cowley, not to be out done by his brother, ran almost the length of the pitch to be dragged down inches before the line, leaving the supporting Glove to pick up and dot over in the corner. The kick bisected the posts from just inside the touchline, 34 – 7. Flora looked to get in on the action with a strong run from his own 22, bursting through tackles and rounding the fullback. What happened next has been strictly scrutinised by the Teachers Union and has had to be censored from this match report and wiped from Renegades history. Renegades turned over the resulting scrum and fed the ball to Harry the back, who had enough strength to force his way over the try line. 39 – 7 final score. Great game played as usual from Wendons and an enjoyable rugby match. Rumour has it Ben Sutton celebrated a Birthday after the game, he can’t really remember but there is a bemused pensioner who would like her teeth back. |
