Match report by Sam Vail |
Peterborough turned up early and were eager to get started, having brought 19 players. The Renegades were missing a few regulars but still managed to field 19 with several new caps. Sam was given the job of Captain for the day and started by winning the toss and deciding on playing the first half with the wind. The Peterborough Fly-half never really got his restart kicking together as time after time the ball failed to travel 10 yards from a kickoff. Lots of early probing by both sides with John 'JC' Crawford making some great surging runs, one of them resulting in a fantastic try on debut. It was extremely unfortunate to lose JC after 10 minutes to a ruptured Achilles tendon. We wish him well with his recovery from surgery. JC's injury left room for Beaky to step up to his best position as hooker. The scrums were all going Peterboroughs way, mostly because they outweighed the Renegades pack by a substantial margin. This advantage in the scrum was their undoing as the Renegades were getting to breakdowns faster and managing to out ruck Peterborough most of the time. The line-outs were also going well with little opposition to the nimble Chris 'The glove' Milne who we could throw much higher than his Peterborough opponent. Excellent ball distribution from Scrum half, Mark and running and passing from the backs allowed Colin to score twice and the Glove to go over as well. Shawnton was proving hard to stop as he continued to surge through the Peterborough lines and Ritz was also making great surging runs. Darey, hampered by the strong wind, scored a penalty and 1 conversion in the half which ended 25-0 to the Renegades. A great team-talk from Flora at half time was an inspiration to those of us too shocked at the score line to comprehend our achievement. The second half against the wind seemed to fly by as the Renegades made some replacements but continued their excellent running game. Two more tries, one from Rob Bevington and the other from Gary Craggs. Another conversion by Darey and the afternoon seemed over. Rik retired hurt when suffering a foot injury to his already injured foot. Some lax tackling by the Renegades forwards, allowed Peterbourough to score from a pick and drive which looked like the only way they were going to score.
"Nice One Boys! "Watching from the sidelines doing my David Bailey bit I have
to say as well as the obvious power, determination and undoubted skills
of the forwards and the guile, pace and workrate of the backs which all
combined to win a great match, the thing that won it for us was that there
was a group of blokes out there, some old hands and some new just wanting
to play rugby and have fun with their mates. This did not show in the
Peterborough team, shouting at each other, swearing at innocent bystanders
on the touchline, blaming each other for mistakes and just not very happy
at all with a certain member of the Gades subs catching a touch ball so
no quick line out. He was still going on about it in the pub. "Just wanted to add my own comments regarding Saturday's excellent
performance. |
