Match report by Sam Vail

Peterborough turned up early and were eager to get started, having brought 19 players. The Renegades were missing a few regulars but still managed to field 19 with several new caps. Sam was given the job of Captain for the day and started by winning the toss and deciding on playing the first half with the wind.

The Peterborough Fly-half never really got his restart kicking together as time after time the ball failed to travel 10 yards from a kickoff. Lots of early probing by both sides with John 'JC' Crawford making some great surging runs, one of them resulting in a fantastic try on debut. It was extremely unfortunate to lose JC after 10 minutes to a ruptured Achilles tendon. We wish him well with his recovery from surgery. JC's injury left room for Beaky to step up to his best position as hooker. The scrums were all going Peterboroughs way, mostly because they outweighed the Renegades pack by a substantial margin. This advantage in the scrum was their undoing as the Renegades were getting to breakdowns faster and managing to out ruck Peterborough most of the time. The line-outs were also going well with little opposition to the nimble Chris 'The glove' Milne who we could throw much higher than his Peterborough opponent.

Excellent ball distribution from Scrum half, Mark and running and passing from the backs allowed Colin to score twice and the Glove to go over as well. Shawnton was proving hard to stop as he continued to surge through the Peterborough lines and Ritz was also making great surging runs. Darey, hampered by the strong wind, scored a penalty and 1 conversion in the half which ended 25-0 to the Renegades.

A great team-talk from Flora at half time was an inspiration to those of us too shocked at the score line to comprehend our achievement.

The second half against the wind seemed to fly by as the Renegades made some replacements but continued their excellent running game. Two more tries, one from Rob Bevington and the other from Gary Craggs. Another conversion by Darey and the afternoon seemed over. Rik retired hurt when suffering a foot injury to his already injured foot. Some lax tackling by the Renegades forwards, allowed Peterbourough to score from a pick and drive which looked like the only way they were going to score.

"Nice One Boys!
No sentimental stuff this week apart from it was a pity Priceless couldn't make it and I'm sure we all wish his brother-in-law well.
Fantastic performance all round today. There were some cracking performances all round, everybody played to their potential and contributed to the max. It was one of the best all round performances we've put together and will certainly up the ante when we go up there."

"Watching from the sidelines doing my David Bailey bit I have to say as well as the obvious power, determination and undoubted skills of the forwards and the guile, pace and workrate of the backs which all combined to win a great match, the thing that won it for us was that there was a group of blokes out there, some old hands and some new just wanting to play rugby and have fun with their mates. This did not show in the Peterborough team, shouting at each other, swearing at innocent bystanders on the touchline, blaming each other for mistakes and just not very happy at all with a certain member of the Gades subs catching a touch ball so no quick line out. He was still going on about it in the pub.

It was great to watch and I am sure fantastic to play in, well done all of you for playing a great game and putting on such a great show.."

"Just wanted to add my own comments regarding Saturday's excellent performance.

Firstly, a massive show of appreciation for Mark at scrum half. It was noted that with most of the play coming through him, the ability for us forwards to get into them and the speed of his distribution to the backs is something that on the day created the opportunities for us to express ourselves. Fantastic Man of the Match performance!

From the back of the scrum it was really noticeable the encouragement and advice we were giving each other. It makes such a difference to hear EVERYONE talking and directing. We were actually planning moves rather than seeing where the ball popped up and reacting to it. This is all the way through the team, from Darey and Ritz telling Mark and myself where they wanted the ball released to the Front row putting up a mighty effort against one of the heaviest Front rows I have played against. Great hooking from Beaky, who was awesome, stepping in to the breach when JC went off, into probably the worse position on the park and winning some great scrums...lesson to be learnt here, if in doubt, don't "hook" the ball just smash it against the oppositions front row and bounce it back to us! Your experience and talking was invaluable on Saturday Beaky!

I wish I could name everyone individually but suffice it to say, you all played your part. The backs were fantastic running at them with confidence and ability, great tackling from all and some lovely tries, well worked. Shawnton was immense again dragging 3 or 4 of them into most tackles and freeing up the other backs with space to attack, which Colin most notably did with aplomb!

Best teamwork I have seen since starting with the 'Gades, also really pleasing to see so many offers of players to be subbed to allow others to play...not sure that this was generosity, tiredness or fear....but it all helps the cause!

Great effort lads, pleasure to run out with you all."
