Match report by Sam Vail

Thanks to everbody who turned up to play in this SPIRE charity match. We are estimating funds in excess of £700 raised for the charity.

After the formality of photos for the Cambridge Evening News , it was time for the toss. The Cantabs captain was concerned at the number of Renegades subs and was unwilling to go for rolling substitutions until it was pointed out that the Renegades are mostly old and fat and that it was a Charity Friendly game!

Cantabs won the toss and decided to play with the breeze, allowing the Renegades to kick-off. The next 10 minutes was a grind of scrums and rucks, edging the Renegades back into their own 22. Gritty defense kept Cantabs at bay and it was the Renegades who scored first through Colin Weir forcing over the line.

The Renegades were pinged again and again for various penalty offences, Alfie was lucky to stay on the pitch after some cheeky questioning of the referees understanding of the laws.

Scrummaging was hard work with some very big and fit boys in the Cantabs front row showing their superior training. Chris Milne was competing well in line-outs, making steals and disrupting well. The backrow were keeping the Renegades in the game with their tackling and rucking.

Cantabs managed a try late in the half but failed to convert leaving the score 5-5 at the mid-way point.

Half-time and a wholesale change of players for the Renegades. The second half continued where the first had finished with the Renegades pegged back in their own half. The Glove was working like a demon, tackling anything that moved. Beaky was making run after run, setting rucks and getting stuck into the action. Every Renegades on the pitch tackled their hearts out but the youth and superior fitness of Cantabs was just too much. 2 more Cantabs tries late in the game made the score look worse than was actually the case.

Will managed to pop something in his groin, nobody wanted to know what it was!

Shawnton decided he was a bit tired and felt like a rest, obviously still recovering from the previous days heavy filming schedule!

Rik turned up to support, looking like a reject from the Matrix (or as Bev put it, "a heavy metal pimp".)

Highlights for Nick: "We look forward to the re-match"

Many thanks for the effort by all

£180 raised in the pub

Fans invading the pitch (Alfie running on and chastising their no 22) after the high tackle on 08 (young Matt).

The largest crowd in the fens watching rugby, Cambribge is just outside by the way, including WAGs.

The disappointment by Will that no-one offered him any on the spot treatment for his groin strain or the offer of  a copy of the Kama Sutra, to see what position would hurt the least, there?s only 28 to pick from.
