Match report by Sam Vail |
The Renegades travelled to St. Neots, preparing to play against their 3rds. However, it seems that the 1sts game had been cancelled so some ringers were bolstering their side. Renegades were undeterred as they has brought along 23 players and were ready for the contest. The game started at a fast pace and a penalty against St. Neots saw Fabio kick a huge penalty goal for a 3-0 lead. St. Neots kept conceding penalties and spilling the ball. Scrums started well with Ren hooking well and challenging the opposition hooker in every encounter. Some smooth passing along the backs and a surging, spinning charge from Jay resulted in the first try out on the far wing. Fabio hit the post with the conversion attempt. 8-0 lead. Line-outs were again working well, despite the strong breeze. Once the St. Neots front jumper was by-passed, the jumping of Glove was unchallenged. Fabio was running strongly and made a break for the try line, eventually being dragged down five metres from the line. Soon after, the Glove made a break, hacking the ball a couple of times and pressuring the fullback. Darey was on hand to pick up the loose ball but was tripped before he could get there. The referee decided a penalty try was in order, Darey missing the conversion. 13-0 lead. Halftime arrived with some stern words from Beaky and some tactical advice from Richard and Fabio. The Renegades backs were standing too flat and not hitting the line at speed, rather they were running sideways and not penetrating as they should. Same for defence, standing off and allowing the St. Neots backs to get a fair run before tackling. Having said that, the defence during the first half was superb. A few positional changes and the Renegades were back into it. Paperboy came on and immediately had his nose broken for his troubles. What are Toni & Guy going to do now? From a quick tap penalty, Darey showed his skill and lungpower by making a 50 metre run through the heart of the opposition defence before touching down for a try. Conversion missed. 18-0 lead. With 20 minutes to go, the Renegades were looking strong, however, the younger legs of the St. Neots backs started to show and they managed to score, partly due to a doughnut pass by Beaky, through the legs, 5 metres from his own try line. They then took a quick tap penalty and made a surging run past all Renegades defences. Just replacement fullback Bev to beat, unfortunately the groin of Bev was not up to the task and the St. Neots back ran around him. A missed drop-kick conversion was the final kick of the game. Final score St . Neots 10 Renegades 18. A cock-up on timings meant that Rik and Richard were unable to get on to the pitch. Sam at fault there. Overall, a good team performance with every member stepping up. We have played better but a win is a win. |
