Match report by Bill Agg

A day perfect for rugby was how the weather report was at 2pm, but after about 45 seconds of the kick off as far as renegades were concerned it could not have been worse!

The weather was dull overcast and a bit breezy and almost straight from the off Wendons gained the upper hand. A high kick was misfielded by Renegades (no names but he was he duly received Doughnut of the match!) the misfield followed by a fumble and flap allowed Wendons to score under the post. This duly converted gave Wendons 0 - 7 advantage and caused a stern talking to be administered!.

The Wendons team Renegades were facing were definitely different to teams played in past with some new faces injecting pace and strength and providing a much sterner test than in the past.

Wendons continued the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty directly in front of the posts. Fortunately the Wendons captain decided it should be kicked, was kickable, and he should do it stepped up. He had the matching pair of boots which Matt Giteau wore in Scotland and as a result the kick went wide. He was duly rewarded with the Wendons Doughnut of the match.

Shortly afterwards the tide began to turn. Renegades broke up pitch and Colin went over for the first try of the day for Renegades. It was unconverted leaving the score at 5- 7. At this point Richard C aggravated a back tweak and was replaced by Bob.

Continued pressure by Renegades saw them camped 10 m off the Wendons line. From a scrum some slick hands up the narrow side saw the ball positively fly from Sam, to Rik and finally to Bill Bob who crashed over for his first try for Renegades….. nay first try ever . The kick converted by JB saw the score 12-7 to Renegades.

The remainder of the half saw a hard fought contest battled out between the 22m lines but with no further score.

A full turn out meant that at half time Nick, Owain, Kevin, Mark (bev's brother in law) and Ritz were brought on. Wendons who only had 15 at the off had no such luxury!

In the second half the wind picked up as soon as Daray kicked off, so much so that his kick off ended up half way across the football pitch resulting in a scrum on centre line. This was the last Wendons saw of the Renegades side of the pitch for some time as whilst the wind continued to make kicking difficult Renegades kept up the pressure, and seemed camped in the Wendons half for most the second half. Every attempt by Wendons to break out ended with Daray pinning them back taking full advantage of the wind.

After about 10 minutes the pressure was rewarded when Daray went over the line and took the ball under the posts. He duly converted his own try taking the score to 19-7.

Shortly after Flora retired hurt with an ankle injury bringing Colin back on.

The remainder of the second half saw concerted pressure from Renegades with Anthony going over for the final try of the day which converted took the final score to 26-7

Quotes!

"Don't know about everybody else, but I had a good time at the game on Saturday!
My personal highlights were hacking on from a lineout and body checking the tiny winger, and also calling a mark from a high ball (who would have thought a prop would be doing that). Must be the lucky 'tache.

Thanks guys for the performance and looking forward to Sawston next week." Sam Vail

"Regarding the game, we had a slow start, once again not properly getting our game-heads on! It was a sloppy and scrappy game throughout with us not recycling and retaining ball well enough. We need to HIT rucks not lean on them. We need to be faster to the breakdown and react quicker to lose ball.

We were missing a few key players namely Bob who only wanted to play 10 mins! We also made a number of changes at half time which doesn't help too.

On a positive note, we had a good victory with Billbob scoring not only his 1st try of the season but his 1st try of his life. We had a great performance from Sam even chasing down kicks! We converted some chances and created others late on in the match which weren't finished off...due to Ren's decision making, not my bad pass!

We have a hard game this week and need to be up for it." Rob Bevington
