Match report by Graham Beckford

With lots of people away Christmas shopping and watching the Baa Baa's a much changed side took the field but with plenty of optimism.

Ely were gracious enough to let us know that they were fielding some of their 2nd teamers as their match had been cancelled but it was agreed that the match would still stand as a league game.

The game was very bitty throughout with some very strange calls from the ref but he was doing his best and it was obvious that the side that controlled their discipline the best were going to be favorites to win.

Even though we dominated territory and possession constant penalties stopped the flow of the game and made it a very scrappy game.

From a set move Will scored an excellent try.

The rest of the game carried on as a bitty affair and Darey kicked a couple of goals to keep as two scores ahead and Ely never really pressured our line.

Lloyd was fantastic in attack and defence leading the backs well which resulted in the man of the match and I escaped the doughnut of the match after a dummy kick went drastically wrong when Richard hoofed the ball from the opposition half towards our own posts and the reason he gave was he was trying to chip it into his hands. Wednesday night's training could be interesting.

Quotes!

"Nice one gents!
Can’t help feeling if there was a Sour Grapes Trophy that Ely are the top contenders. They lost, we won; did any of the referees dubious decisions award us points we didn’t deserve or deny them points they didn’t? No! So to walk away from the pitch moaning, for only half of them come to the pub afterwards perhaps says a lot. I think the biggest problem was they expected to win and we not only denied them the opportunity but we actually ground out our own win. Well done to everybody, the support running was great, the defence was solid and effort was tremendous. We have often talked in the past about playing our game and I’m not sure we ever knew what that was, now however we do have a game plan and style; as Beaky said later in the pub we also have a try scoring move!
Thanks to for the support from the sidelines, its great to see that we’re more popular than Christmas shopping or the pantomime!
Talk after the game was of the “craic” and just how good Renegades feels at the moment, we’re a club so it’s all about us; keep turning up, playing, sticking together, talking and enjoying it. Get your tour money paid! Tour is without doubt the best therapy you can get, and you deserve it!" Chris Beddow

"Well put Chris.
Just a note to whoever is doing the match report to the effect that after his sterling 2 minute appearance, Nolan can (probably) no longer fly his refueling jets. He's likely to be classed as 'damaged Government property' by the USAF until his detached pinkie is re-joined to the rest of his body.
So, on the re-curring theme of club songs and to the tune of balls to your partner, arse against the wall, if you've never played for Renegades you've never played at all....Nolan played for Renegades and detached his little finger
He should try a safer sport, he should be a winger...
and then there's
Bev had a baby girl, he called her Connie dear
... you can add the rest"
John Bateson

"Well done everyone. Very pleased to have got the personal try count underway for the season! Shame it wasn't a more free-flowing encounter, but we definitely had the upper hand in more ways than one.
Rog, I hope you enjoyed your supper!
Finally I must apologise to Connie for snubbing your offer of a drink, I hope you (or your Dad) weren't too offended!" Will Cleare
